The ADATer is an easy-to-use connector-size box designed for use with a rack unit of widely spread M-Audio Delta 1010 soundcards.

ADATer turns your DELTA 1010 rack unit into a stand alone 8-IN 8-OUT Analog-to-Lightpipe / Lightpipe-to-Analog converter. It provides two Lightpipe (TOSLINK) connectors, one Input and one Output and is designed to work without a computer. It uses the ADAT™ communication protocol which allows the use of 8 channels of 16 or 24 bit encoded digital audio each way.

The master clock must be provided by the host to which the DELTA and ADATer is connected. The ADATer does not have its own clock reference and so cannot be used without the master. However it locks up to any sampling frequencies from 30 to 55KHz. Although the DELTA supports higher sample rates (such as 64, 88.2 and 96KHz), these are not supported by ADATer as the ADAT™ protocol can carry only 4 channels in these modes.

We have developed the ADATer for the following reasons:

  • There are no decent-quality yet cheap AD-DA/Lightpipe convertors on the market.
  • Everybody is selling the DELTA 1010 soundcards for buttons.
  • A lot of people have the DELTA 1010 soundcards but having upgraded their studio gear, the DELTA’s are just gathering dust.

The ADATer gives your old DELTA 1010 a new lease of life. For example:

  • It works great with the RME systems that support the ADAT interface. Obviously using the RME ASIO and Totalmix™ features.
  • It can be used with many digital desks as a port expansion.
  • Because of its optical connection it eliminates the ground loops which you may have experienced with a DELTA connected to your computer's chassis.

Using the ADATer is very simple:

All you need is: a functional M-Audio DELTA 1010 rack unit with its PSU, the ADATer, and another mains adapter to power the ADATer. The adapter is not included in the package as every country has different mains sockets. However the ADATer supports ANY voltage of ANY polarity from 9 to 12V AC or DC! You don't need the PCI Host Card at all as the ADATer is designed to run without a computer or DELTA 1010 drivers.

At this point I'd like to mention (just to make things absolutely clear) that the ADATer does NOT work with DELTA 1010LT soundcards as the LT version does not have the rack unit.

Firstly, make sure there is no PSU connected to the DELTA 1010 and the ADATer. Connect the ADATer to the rack unit where the HOST CABLE normally goes in and secure the screws.

Plug the DELTA 1010's PSU into the rack unit as you would when you use it with a computer and turn it on (1). Now plug your adapter into the ADATer and plug it into the mains(2). That's it! If everything works fine the rack unit will indicate Power On and you should see the red light coming from the optical output of the ADATer.

You are now ready to plug in your Lightpipes (3). As soon as you connect the D/A lightpipe, when there's a valid clock, the ADATer's green SYNC LED will go ON and your DELTA will be running in sync with the master. As long as the SYNC led is on, the output lightpipe and the DELTA's Word Clock output are providing the same clock reference as the master.
